The design intention for this 20,000 square foot city gym was to create a relatively neutral space through large volumes and simple materials, leaving the focus on the clients and the exercise. Originally, the mechanical space for the building, the main exercise room is kept cool by infusion of outside air. Black glass and mirrors were used to expand spaces, which also direct attention back into the exercise spaces without the sense of being on display. A simple sloped wall acts as an art gallery corridor which separates the aerobic and spinning classrooms from the main body of the gym. Upstairs, a proposed addition to the gym will include more space for aerobics, spinning classes and a juice bar.
